Labor Activist Reza Shahabi and Prominent Attorney Nasrin Sotoudeh on Dry Hunger Strike


RAHANA: Reza Shahabi was arrested in June but has not been charged with any crimes yet. In the recent weeks, Gholamreza Gholam-Hosseini, Morteza Kamsari, and Ali Akbar Nazari, several other members of the Tehran Bus Union, have been arrested. Shahabi is still confined in Ward 209 after 4 months of detention even though his detention order has expired. more...


Mohammad Pour-Abdollah Still in Prison despite Serving Half of His Sentence


RAHANA: Student activist Mohammad Pour-Abdollah was detained on September 13, 2008 and was sentenced to 6 years in prison. His sentence was later reduced to 3 years in prison

Journalist Massoud Lavasani Returns to Prison after his Prison Leave Extension Denied


RAHANA: Journalist Massoud Lavasani was arrested in October following the post- election protests and was sentenced to 6 years in prison.

According to RAHANA , on Monday, Lavasani was summoned to prison over the phone.

The lower court had sentenced him to 8 ½ years in prison and a 10 year ban from journalism. more...

Human Rights Activist Jafar Eghdami Transferred to Quarantine Ward of Rajaei Shahr Prison


RAHANA: Eghdami was detained on July 31, 2008 and was under intense psychological torture in the solitary confinement unit of Ward 209.

Prominent Reformist Ali Shakourirad Re-Arrested



RAHANA: Ali Shakourirad, member of Iranian reformist party, Islamic Iran Participation Front, was arrested again by the Islamic Republic authorities for implicating Iran’s head of judiciary in supporting reformists.

Tehran Revolutionary and Public Court reported that Ali Shakourirad was arrested today over the charge of attributing falsehoods to Ayatollah Sadegh Larijani, head of Iran’s judiciary. more...

Detained Iranian blogger gets temoporary release



RAHANA: Hossein Derakhshan, Iranian blogger who was detained in Iran since two years ago was finally released last night on a short furlough.

Derakhshan was released on a 1.5 million-dollar bail and the family is hopeful that with the verdict of the appellate court he would not have to return to prison. more...

Political Prisoner on Hunger Strike in Mahabad Prison


RAHANA: He was arrested on September 19th in Sardasht by the security forces and there are reports that he is in critical condition after 6 days of hunger strike.

His hunger strike is to protest the lack of medical attention and the failure of the authorities to follow-up on his case.

There are concerns as to the condition of the 28 year old prisoner.

Mokhtar’s Houshmand’s 16 Year Prison Sentence Reduced to 7 Years


RAHANA: Mokhtar Houshmand had been sentenced to 16 years in prison for espionage, anti-regime propaganda and collaborating with anti-regime groups. The appeals court has reduced the sentence to 7 years in prison.

According to Kurdish news sources, he was detained on May 23rd by the Marivan security forces. more...

Khorramabad Political Activist Hossein Mahdavi Arrested


Former secretary of the Islamic Student Association at Lorestan University Hossein Mahdavi was detained on December 4th for the second time in the past year after being summoned to the Khorramabad Intelligence Ministry.

RAHANA: Issa Saharkhiz, detained Iranian journalist is in critical condition after undergoing surgery to stop internal bleeding.

Jailed journalist’s blood pressure rose dramatically yesterday but the prosecutor refused to give permission for his transfer to a hospital.

Arsalan Abadi Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison


The security forces and plainclothes agents raided the office of Shargh newspaper one more time.

RAHANA: Arsalan Abadi is currently held in Ward 350 of the Evin Prison and was originally charged with Moharebeh(waging war against God). He was first sentenced to 9 ½ years in prison which was later changed to 6 years. His sentence has been reduced to 3 years because of the amnesties granted after Eid al-Ghadeer (a festive day observed by Shia Muslims). more...

Amir Khorram Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison and 74 Lashes


RAHANA: Amir Khorram has been sentenced to 7 years in prison and 74 lashes for acting against national security by membership in Freedom Movement of Iran, writing articles, interviewing foreign media and participating in illegal gatherings.

Shiraz University of Technology Student Afshin Keshtgari Held Incommunicado


RAHANA: On December 7th, Afshin Keshtgari was summoned to the Intelligence Ministry along with 9 other students. The students were interrogated.

According to RAHANA, 8 students were released after a few hours but Keshtgari has been in detention since then and there is no information as to his condition. more...

Detained labor activist, Reza Shahabi is in critical health condition in Iranian prison after starting on a dry hunger strike on December 4.

Zohreh Rezai, Shahabi’s wife has reported that her husband has gone on a hunger strike in protest to his undetermined judicial case and has emphasized that he will remain on hunger strike until his status is clarified by the judiciary. more...

RAHANA: Hossein Ronaghi-Maleki (a.k.a Babak Khorramdin) was arrested along with his brother Hassan Ronaghi-Maleki on the December 13th, 2009 in the city of Malekan near Tabriz and transferred to Evin prison.  According to RAHANA, during his 11 months in prison, Ronaghi- Maleki, a web blogger and human rights activist was exposed to both physical and psychological torture at Evin’s ward 2A, with the hope to obtain a forced confession and television interview. more...

Another Shargh Newspaper Reporter Detained


RAHANA: Anvari is a reporter for the economics section who has previously worked for Etemad and other several reformist newspapers.

On December 7th, the security forces arrested a number of other Shargh reporters. Farzaneh Roustaei, Keyvan Mehregan, Ahmad Gholami and Ali Khodabakhsh were detained after raiding the raid on the newspaper’s office. more...
